As the hype surrounding bitcoin has increased, bitcoin mining businesses have grown. Bitcoin mining is the process of generating and putting new bitcoin into circulation. It is an energy intensive process. Cipher Mining Technologies, a U.S.-based bitcoin mining company, is one such industry player.

Merger with a SPAC

In mid-July, Cipher Mining announced that it would be merging with Good Works Acquisition Corp., a publicly-traded special purpose acquisition company (SPAC). Following the transaction, the value of Cipher Mining will be around $2 billion. The transaction is expected to close in the second quarter of 2021.

Circle Internet Financial is one of the largest companies in the cryptocurrency sector. It disclosed that it will be setting aside $10.4 million to settle a case with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The case involves the company’s previous acquisition of Poloniex, a now discontinued crypto exchange.

Bullish, a fast-growing crypto startup, announced in early July that it would be going public. It plans to merge with a special purpose acquisition company, or SPAC. The SPAC is Far Peak Acquisition Corp. Thomas Farley, the former head of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), will run Far Peak. The merger would give the combined company an approximately $9 billion valuation.

Venture capital firms such as Silicon Valley’s Andreessen Horowitz have been on the lookout for opportunities to invest in hot blockchain startups.
